The futon is a type of bed that originated in Japan. In the West, we've modified it to be a combination couch and bed. The mattress on a Western-style futon is much thicker than what the Japanese use. In America we use slated frames so a thicker futon mattress is necessary so the slates aren't felt through the bedding.

Finding the right futon mattress depends on your budget and how you plan to use your futon. Will it be a replacement for a bed, to be used every night? Will it mainly be used as a couch in a family room or will it be used rarely, usually when you have house guests? Determining the use is important for picking out a futon mattress that will be comfortable.

Coil Innerspring Mattresses

This is the most expensive type of futon mattress but is often the most comfortable. If you plan on converting your futon from a couch to bed on a daily basis, this would be the more easily foldable mattress. Usually, the coils are individually pocketed to allow for flexibility. The coils are surrounded by a several layers of cotton. If you plan on sleeping on your futon every night, this is definitely the best option.

Blended and Layered Mattresses

These are the most common type of futon mattresses. They are middle of the road in price. You can get anywhere from five to eleven layers of cotton, foam and/or polyester. Foam mattresses are easy to fold and conform to your shape better. These mattresses are often sold based on how many inches thick it is. If you plan on using your futon on a semi-regular basis as a sleeper or couch, this would be the best option for you.

Economy Mattresses

An economy mattress will be easy on your wallet but maybe not on your body's comfort. This type of futon mattress is usually a cotton/polyester blend. If a futon is sold in a set, both frame and mattress, you will often get a thin, economy mattress with the package. It might be worthwhile to invest in a thicker type. The cheaper mattresses will be firm rather than soft or bouncy. However, if you plan on rarely using your futon, like for occasional house guests, this might be the best choice for you.

Thinking about your use of the futon mattress will definitely help you pick one that will be best for your family and budget. Some mattress sellers suggest purchasing a futon cover to protect it from stains and frequent cleaning. A cover can add a color and style to any mattress type you pick.
