Have you ever tried getting a good night's sleep and then realised that you have a very uncomfortable mattress? Like all things, mattresses age; we eventually have to replace them to ensure that we are not endangering our health because sleeping on a mattress that is too firm or too soft can cause back problems.

There are many types of mattresses on the market these days but one type that is emerging as durable, healthy and economical is the latex mattress. Latex mattresses are classified as orthopaedic mattresses, which is just a fancy term for an extra firm mattress. So what makes the best latex mattress?

So what is a Latex Mattress?

A latex mattress is basically a mattress with a latex core. The best latex mattress will have a springy feel to it; it is, after all, made from rubber. The latex core, which is just a big piece of latex, has holes in it to give the mattress a softer feel and more comfort for the user. The bigger the holes in the latex core, the softer your mattress will feel.

The best latex mattress will differ in firmness in different parts. For example, the mattress will feel softer under your shoulders and feet but nicely firm around the back and hip area. This is achieved with a core that is made up of different pieces of latex with different sized holes.

Most latex mattresses come layered with other materials to produce a softer mattress. The best latex mattress should have both latex and what is called memory foam. Memory foam helps to relieve pressure that latex alone may not be able to. Alternately you can buy a latex mattress and add a topper layer of memory foam to it. The choice is up to you.

Natural or Synthetic?

There are two types of latex, natural and synthetic. Latex mattresses are available with either natural or synthetic latex. The most obvious difference between the two is that natural latex is more expensive than synthetic latex. In terms of feel and durability there is no real difference.

Synthetic latex is produced in two different ways. The first and traditional method is called the Dunlop method. The second, which is a more complex process, is called the Talalay method. The best latex mattress is made of Talalay latex, which has a lighter less dense feeling than latex made via the Dunlop method.

Good for You, Good for the Environment

As mentioned earlier, latex mattresses have a firmer feel that is ideal for correct posture during sleep. Another benefit of using latex mattresses is that they have good insulation and ventilation meaning that you won't overheat in summer or freeze in winter and you even cut down on your heating and air conditioning bills with these mattresses.
