Selecting The Right Mattress Size
If the average person sleeps six to eight hours per day, that would calculate out to be an average of 180 to 240 hours a month or 2,160 to 2,880 hours a year. If you do the math, this calculates out to be 90 to 120 days out of the year. It therefore stands to reason that if a significant portion of our life is spent sleeping, the right mattress for sleeping should be utilized.
Not only is sleeping an important part of our health in renewing our body, but sleeping on the right mattress size is also an important component to receiving that good night’s rest. Some studies indicate that the four out of every five people complain about some form of back pain and often this back pain is associated with an improper mattress.
There are many factors to consider when purchasing a mattress. Some of these factors include its firmness, the warrantee, reputation of the manufacturer and the size of the mattress.
When considering the right mattress size that the suits your needs, there are a few considerations you can follow. The considerations include what type of mattress to purchase and a rule of thumb considering the right mattress size.
Mattress Size Availability
First of all, it is important to remember that there are various mattress sizes available on the market today. These sizes include twin, full-size mattresses, queen, .king and California king. These varying mattress sizes are measured in inches with each of the five categories having their own dimensions.
The length of twin and full-size mattresses are 75 inches in length. The queen and king-size mattresses are both 80 inches in length. And the California king, which is the largest mattress, is 84 inches long. There are, of course, differences in width which add to the differences of these different types of mattresses. An appropriate mattress size for a sleeping couple is a queen or king-size bed.
The Rule of Thumb Regarding Mattress Size
There is a generally accepted rule of thumb for selecting the appropriate mattress size for an individual. This rule of thumb states that the appropriate mattress size length selected for an individual should exceed their height by six inches.
It is also important to remember that, even though sleeping habits differ from person to person, the average sleeping individual will shift their positions anywhere from 40 to 60 times during any given night. Therefore, a mattress size that is not appropriate for an individual may interrupt that person’s sleep. This is in turn may affect the persons health and well-being.
