Since we spend many hours in a day getting close and personal with our mattress, it makes sense that we would want to know how to clean our mattress to keep it fresh for our sleep experience.

But what do you do when you decide your mattress needs a cleaning? It certainly isn't an item that can simply be thrown into the washing machine for a good scrubbing! Fortunately, there are a number of steps to take to ensure that your mattress stays as clean as possible, and some good advice on what to do if something does get spilled.

How to keep your Mattress Clean

Regular maintenance is the first step in learning how to clean your mattress properly. First, you want to buy a mattress pad or cover that will protect your mattress from the normal wear and tear of life. If you want additional security, you can select a waterproof mattress pad that will fend off liquid spills even more effectively. It is much easier to toss a soiled mattress pad into the laundry than it is to scrub down a dirty mattress!

You can also flip your mattress regularly to ensure even wear. Every six months or so, turn your mattress over, and switch the head of your mattress to the foot of the bed. While you have the bed stripped for this ritual, you might also want to take the time to get out the vacuum attachment and give your mattress a de-dusting. If you suffer from allergies, particularly to dust mites, you may want to repeat this process much more frequently.

How to Clean Stains from a Mattress

If, despite your best efforts, you do end up with a stain on your mattress, you will need to learn how to spot-clean the mattress properly. The first thing to know is that moisture of any kind can be extremely damaging to a mattress, because it can cause mold and mildew to develop inside the casing.

Therefore, it is best to try forms of dry cleaning methods before resorting to liquid cleaners to take out stains. The first cleaning solution you can try is commercial upholstery cleaner or a homemade solution that is mixed from mild detergent and water. Stir your mixture until suds form, and then apply just the dry suds to your mattress with a sponge. For blood or urine stains, you can try dabbing at the spots with hydrogen peroxide and a clean white towel.

If you mattress does end up getting damp during your cleaning, make sure that it dries completely before replacing bedding. You can take your mattress outside on a warm day to dry in the sun, or you can use a fan across the mattress to expedite drying time.

Your mattress is a big investment that you want to maintain as long as possible. By learning how to clean your mattress properly and keeping up with a regular maintenance schedule, your mattress can last for many years.
